“We had our baby’s oral ties released when she was about one month old, and we saw Breanna for body tension concerns. She is incredibly knowledgeable and truly exceptional at what she does. From the moment we met her, we felt confident our daughter was in the best hands. Breanna was so gentle and attentive with our little one, and her experience working in the NICU really shines through in her care and expertise. I was genuinely blown away by how skillfully she worked with our daughter and how thoroughly she explained everything to us. She also gave us helpful, easy-to-follow exercises to continue at home, which made such a difference.”
“I am a mom of 7 month twins and have been seeing Kathy at Balanced Babies since they were a few weeks old… I can’t believe it has taken me this long to write my raving review about our experience. Unknowingly to me, at the time, my twins were born with a LOT of muscular/fascial tension due to their close quarters in the womb. This presented as hysterically crying during diaper changes, not tolerating the car seat, digestion issues (trapped gas), and eventually Torticollis. With each visit, my twins “unraveled” and are now the most centered, calm, bendy, and BALANCED babies! What would have otherwise been described as “colic” was entirely relieved through the work we had done. Their heads are beautifully shapen. My twins reached and exceeded milestone markers which wouldn’t have otherwise been possible. I can’t say enough good things about Kathy and how important she was to our team postpartum. If there is any part of you wondering if your baby would benefit from craniosacral OT, book with Kathy!!”
“Kathy is a miracle worker! Our son had torticollis since birth and we had been seeing a PT for ~2 months making no progress and was on track for a helmet and basically PT appointments until at least 1 year old we were being told.
Booking an appointment with Kathy was the first time I truly leaned into and listened to my “mom intuition” and I am forever grateful that I listened to that feeling. After the first appointment you could see changes immediately with our son, and they lasted! His body seemed to finally relax and stay relaxed. His torticollis has improved so much, he doesn’t need a helmet, and he just graduated from needing regular appointments all thanks to Kathy! She helped teach us so many important stretches and movements to implement at home. I cannot recommend Kathy/CST enough!! You will not be disappointed booking an appointment with her.”
AN EXPERIENCED OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST
By understanding the complex and subtle interactions between the musculoskeletal, neurological, visceral, fascial, craniosacral, and lymphatic systems of the body, it allows us to integrate therapies in such a way to provide a unique and individualized approach for each one our clients, assisting them to release restrictions in the body to ultimately find better health, function and well-being.
If you are noticing trouble latching, bottle refusal, breast side preference, milk leaking from the baby’s mouth, or uneasy feedings-these can all be indicators of tightness and/or weakness in the body.
At Balanced Babies, we look at the entire picture. The structures of the mouth are connected to the whole body. Assessment of not only oral motor function is important but assessing how the baby moves as a whole is our goal. We utilize advanced Craniosacral therapy techniques to relieve tension in the baby’s mouth, jaw, neck, head, and sacrum to assist the body to self-correct and align structurally, allowing all systems to work properly together. Hence, Balanced Babies!
Treatment may improve liquid intake, duration of feeding times, alignment, sense of calm and feeding readiness, improved latch, and efficiency of feeding sessions.
Tongue and lip ties interfere with babies’ ability to latch onto the breast and suck adequately without discomfort or fatigue.
Tongue and lip restrictions are more often than not a full body issue not just localized to the tongue or lips. The baby may be restricted at the occipital cranial base (where the head meets the neck), could be tight throughout the neck paired with shoulder elevation, looking as if there is no neck, may have torticollis (tightness greater on one side of the neck most often tilting on the tight side and rotating their head in the opposite direction), may have a recessed chin or restrictions in the jaw, or may be stiff and tense throughout the body.
If there are any kind of twists in the craniosacral system along the spine, head, neck or sacrum it will negatively impact baby’s ability in terms of latch, and suck, swallow, breathe rhythm.
CST cannot make tongue ties disappear. However, if we can anatomically address restrictions from a full body, neck, tongue and palate approach by relaxing and softening tissue through a light touch, non-invasive manual manipulation it is likely baby will nurse more efficiently, as well as improve baby’s latch on the bottle decreasing the amount of air ingested, fluid leakage, gas, reflux and colic.
Although treatment is often an interdisciplinary team approach, tongue, lip and buccal ties are typically diagnosed by a pediatric dentist, midwife or physician.
Before a release, as CST may assist in achieving optimal function and may alleviate need for a release.
If a release is needed, CST will assist the body in preparation for the release by softening and relaxing tissue.
CST following a release to ensure there are no restrictions in soft tissue or fascial strain patterns as a result of the release, help relieve tension patterns, facilitate structural alignment, improve mobility and support and calm the central nervous system.
If a release is performed, a post release appointment is recommended 24-72 hours post release with a TOTS trained therapist to ensure optimal wound healing, and facilitate strengthening and coordination.
Myofunctional therapy is the neuromuscular re-education of dysfunctional oral & facial muscles. Myofunctional therapy trains muscles in your mouth and face to move in a way that supports function. Myofunctional therapy pairs well with craniosacral therapy as craniosacral therapy frees restrictions allowing the body to move more freely and function more effectively.
The four goals of therapy are: 1. Nasal breathing 2. Lip seal 3. Proper tongue posture 4. Correct chewing & swallowing
By restoring normal function and eliminating compensations, patients see improvements in symptoms including clenching, grinding, sleep issues, TMJ pain, digestive issues, headaches etc; a reduction in orthodontic relapse; & guiding proper craniofacial growth in babies & children.
Myofunctional therapy works best in a team-based approach & referrals may be recommended.
Normal breathing is done through the nose which is specifically designed to filter pathogens and allergens, warm & humidify the air. Nasal breathing promotes proper tongue posture and facial development. It also increases oxygen uptake and produces, NO2, a very important molecule for our health.
Proper tongue posture occurs when the tip of the tongue is resting against the “Spot” and the middle and back of the tongue are suctioned against the roof of the mouth. Essentially your tongue should fill up your entire palate. When the tongue is low, this promotes mouth breathing, provides no vagus nerve stimulation, and may cause obstruction of the airway during sleep.
At rest, our lips should be sealed to facilitate nasal breathing and tongue posture.
Correct chewing and swallowing patterns are important to eliminate muscle compensations. When using other muscles to compensate for oral dysfunction, we see jaw, head and neck pain.
Following each session home program exercises will be given, and built upon each visit to reflect progress. Home program exercises are an integral part of therapy. Successful therapy depends directly on compliance with the exercises. If the exercises are not done, or not done correctly, the desired results won’t be achieved.
It is common that babies are diagnosed with reflux, colic, and constipation. If fact, parents are often told that babies can go several days without pooping… Babies should poop! At Balanced Babies, we truly believe in getting to the root cause of these discomforts and motility concerns.
Swallowing too much air? Tension around the belly button? Tightness in the shoulders? These can be contributing factors. CST, Myofascial release and visceral manipulation can help release tension and fascial strains.
Reflux and/or vomiting after every meal is not typical! Craniosacral therapy and visceral manipulation can help your baby realign the pelvis, relieve fascial strain on the digestive system and relieve pressure on the Vagus nerve. Balanced Babies can help with internal discomforts.
Craniosacral therapy, Myofascial Release, and Visceral Manipulation can help release tension or fascial strains in or around the sphincters of the body. Sphincters are ring-shaped muscles that relax or tighten to open or close a passage in the body.
Restrictions in the sphincters can be managed by medication, surgery, or the natural approach or bodywork. If there are fascial strains in the sphincter regions, CST/MFR/VM can help to release tension and support typical function and motility.
Prevents air from getting into the esophagus and food/liquid aspirating back from the esophagus into the respiratory system.
Keeps the stomach contents from baking up into the esophagus (reflux)
Allows chyme from the stomach to pass into the small intestines (infant pyloric stenosis may cause forceful vomiting and dehydration).
Keeps contents of the small and large intestines separate (diarrhea).
Sphincters that control the collecting and evacuation of stool.
Controls holding and emptying of urine.
Balanced Babies can assist with head shaping and torticollis by determining and treating the root cause. Whether that be compressive forces, fascial, muscular restrictions, or physiological structures of the body including bones of the head and face, neck, spine, diaphragm, and pelvis.
Soft tissues consist of muscles, fascia, connective tissue, ligament and tendons, meninges (lining of the skull) and the membranes around the cranium and spinal cord. The soft tissues unfortunately pull and can move the bones of the body including the bones of the cranium, causing the head to misshape and the neck to tilt or rotate (torticollis). Releasing tension in surrounding tissues helps to create space for the cranial bones to correct and promote symmetry in the body.
Torticollis may sound overwhelming, or even scary. However, Balanced Babies strives to empower and educate families, by providing strategies to incorporate at home, along with the hands-on bodywork treatment to facilitate the lengthening and strengthening of the muscles causing side preference, promoting alignment, head shaping, and support the progression of developmental milestones.
As an alternative to traditional Torticollis stretches which often result in babies crying and parents ceasing to continue with exercises; craniosacral therapy, myofascial release, and visceral manipulation offer a safe, gentle and effective way to increase neck range of motion and body alignment.
Visceral manipulation addresses mobility/motility of the organs and their connective tissues, Increased tension may contribute to musculoskeletal asymmetries.
Helmets and Doc Bands can assist in shaping the head outwardly, however does not address the root cause from a whole-body systems approach. CST can amplify the work of the helmet by gently treating the bones of the head and face, shorten treatment time and improve the bodies symmetry and overall function.
For faster progress and fewer treatments, treatment is recommended as soon as possible. A consult is suggested for even mild head shaping concerns. Treatment sessions can vary greatly depending on individual need and progress. Treatment sessions for babies with both Torticollis and head shaping concerns may benefit from 1-2xs per week for 5-10 weeks.
Craniosacral Therapy can reduce pain, accelerate healing, and aid in the prevention of ear infections. This gentle noninvasive therapy helps to release restrictions and relieve sources of abnormal strain in the cranial bones and membranes. If there is torsion or compression of the temporal bones, this misalignment can clog the eustachian tubes. If the tubes are blocked or congested, pressure can form behind the ear drum. This can cause pain, infection and lack of movement.
Craniosacral therapy along with lymphatic drainage addresses the soft tissue, fascia, fluid, and bones of the face and cranium, as well as the entire body. When movement is restored, inflammation is reduced, fluid exchange is improved, the nervous system is calmed, and function is optimal.
Medication can help, however if the root causes are not addressed, ear infections may keep coming back becoming chronic. Common colds, allergies, congestion, and misshapen heads are common triggers for ear infections.
**Sometimes there are no obvious symptoms
Craniosacral therapy may encourage fertility by facilitating the body to regulate hormone levels, releasing tension and imbalances in the body while promoting relaxation to support optimal reproductive function. When our body is in a parasympathetic state it enables us to rest, digest, and reproduce.
Craniosacral therapy is a gentle therapy that can help to relieve the physical discomforts of pregnancy and support emotional regulation. The physiological changes that accompany pregnancy and the shift in one’s center of gravity may increase strain on the body. CST during pregnancy primarily focuses on optimizing the motility of the intricate system of bones, muscles, fluid, and soft tissue to release restrictions in the body to ease ligament/joint pain, low back, hip pain, promote alignment, reduce tension, and create a deep sense of calmness. By freeing restrictions and creating space, CST may also support ideal fetal positioning. CST is a great way to prepare the body and mind for childbirth.
In the postpartum period, craniosacral provides whole body integration nurturing the mother’s physical and emotional recovery.
While Balanced Babies specializes in early intervention of the infant, we strive for a healthy family dynamic. Craniosacral therapy is helpful for all ages. The therapist will provide gentle manual manipulation and mobilization by using anatomically specific placements on the head and body to provide a wonderfully calm reset for your mind and body.
The craniosacral system includes the soft spinal tissue and cerebral spinal fluid. This fluid is pumping throughout the body and helps to regulation the central nervous system, organs, and musculoskeletal system. Daily stress can cause tightening of the soft tissues that impact the central nervous system. Compression of cranial nerves and fascial restrictions can impact the entire body. CST uses light touch to release restrictions in the body helping the body to structurally self-correct and find balance to help relieve pain, boost immunity, health, function and well-being.
